Before Toto was formed The members of the band played sessions for other musicians. David Paich, the son of drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all played on Boz Scaggsalbum in 1975 Silk Degrees. The group's collaboration led to formation of Toto in 1976.
Turn Back, Toto's third studio album was criticized by critics for the absence of hit singles. In 1985 the group's lead singer Fergie Fredericksen quit the group, and they held auditions to find a replacement frontman. The band selected guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in 1986.
Toto released Toto XX in 1998 to mark the 20th anniversary of the band. The group went through old tapes and recordings to create the album. The album was well received by fans and the band embarked on a tour featuring former members Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro, and Joseph Williams.
Shem von Schröck replaced Leland Sklar as drummer on the tour for the 40 Trips Around the Sun album. In 2017, Toto released a double-CD live album titled Falling in Between, which included recordings from the tour as well as an interview with the group.
