Before Toto was formed The members of the band played sessions for other musicians. Toto released Toto XX in 1998 to mark the 20th anniversary of the band. The group went through old tapes and recordings to create the album. The album was well received by fans and the band embarked on a tour featuring former members Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro, and Joseph Williams.

Shem von Schröck replaced Leland Sklar as drummer on the tour for the 40 Trips Around the Sun album. In 2017, Toto released a double-CD live album titled Falling in Between, which included recordings from the tour as well as an interview with the group.
